Scope
After decades studying the theoretical aspects associated with the stochasticity of physical processes and chemical reactions, recent advances in experimental molecular biology have begun to provide a wealth of data revealing the relevance of noise in the biophysical and biochemical processes that govern the behavior of cells. This workshop intends to bring together the theoretical and experimental communities involved in these quests, with the aim of setting a common ground and a common set of problems to address in the near future.
The list of topics that will be discussed include:
- Regulation of gene expression
- Intra- and inter-cellular spatiotemporal dynamics
- Development and differentiation
- Biological rhythms
- Molecular motors

Location
The workshop will be held in Cosmocaixa, the newly renovated science museum of the city of Barcelona. The museum is located on the hillside of the Tibidabo mountain, overlooking the city. A map of the area around the museum can be found here.
How to reach Cosmocaixa:
- If your hotel is close to the conference guesthouses:
Every morning during the conference, a shuttle bus will take the workshop participants from the guesthouse "Torre Girona" to the Science Museum (Cosmocaixa). The bus will be waiting outside the main entrance of the "Torre Girona" guesthouse, and will depart at 8:30am sharp. Please be there on time, specially on thursday.
If you miss the conference bus, you can get to the museum by public bus (line 60). The bus stop is also shown in this map. It's a few blocks away from the guesthouse. There's a bus every 10-15 minutes (every 40 minutes on saturday!), and the ride takes around 20-25 minutes in normal traffic conditions. You can find a detailed timetable and map of the public bus route here.
- If your hotel is in the city center:
The easiest way to get to the conference location in that case is to use the subway (metro: Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat). Line 7 takes you from Plaza Catalunya to Avinguda Tibidabo. From Avinguda Tibidado you have to walk a few blocks (uphill) to get to the science museum. The subway trip takes 10-15 minutes, and the walk another 15 minutes. A map of the area around the museum, with the bus and metro stops highlighted, can be found here.
Accomodation
Accomodation has been reserved for most participants at the guesthouses Torre Girona and Penyafort, located in the Pedralbes area. A map of the area can be found here.
Getting here
The Barcelona International Airport is located 16 km south of the city of Barcelona. A taxi ride from the airport to the guesthouses costs around 20 euros.
Public transportation options from the airport to the guesthouses are:
- A bus takes you to Plaza Catalunya and from there you take the subway (green line) towards "Zona Universitaria", stopping at station "Palau Reial". This is a rather long trip (you have to get to the city center).
- A train takes you to Sants (you have to switch trains at El Prat, due to construction work). From there you take the subway (green line) towards "Zona Universitaria", stopping at station "Palau Reial".
