The
Astronomy and Astrophysics Group of the
Polytechnical University of Catalunya (
UPC) gathers a reduced number of people interested in a wide spectrum of subjects of modern Astronomy. The history of the group began in year 1995 just after several Astrophycisists belonging to two different physics departments (
The Applied Physics and the Physics and Nuclear Engineering Dpt.) joined efforts to create a competitive research group in space sciences within the UPC. At present moment the AAG has 8 permanent researchers and 10 post-graduate students pursuing their PhD degree.
The principal area of research activity of the AAG can be classified as
Theoretical Astrophysics. The subject is very broad including
computer simulations of late stages of stellar evolution (white dwarf cooling, AGBs, novae and supernovae explosions, X-ray bursts and compact objects physics),
structure and dynamics of jets related to PN and Herbig-Haro objects and Cosmology. Several people are also interested in others areas, including the
design of instrumentation to be carried by scientific satelites.
Because the UPC activity is spreaded in several campus, people belonging to AAG suffer from some geographycal dispersion. We basically work in two campus:
Barcelona city and Castelldefels (15 km from Barcelona going south).
